BSCOS is pleased to announce that we have been accepted as an IODA Charter Signatory in recognition of dedication  to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in orthopaedic surgery.

By signing the Charter, the society makes a commitment to fostering an environment that reflects the diversity of our communities. Upholding these principles not only strengthens our profession by attracting the top talent and driving innovation but also leads to more equitable, patient-centred care.

For the past few months, the Board along with the BOA  have been working on this document. It sets out our thoughts on and recommendations for Best Practice in Children’s T & O in the UK.

As the British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery, we note a recent article written in the Times. We feel it is important to clarify that almost 30% of our Society's members are female orthopaedic surgeons—a figure that continues to grow year on year.

Misconceptions such as those cited in the  article are not new and do not reflect the evolving reality of our profession. Orthopaedic surgery is a dynamic and fulfilling field that demands a wide range of competencies—problem-solving, precision, empathy and teamwork among them. 

Perpetuating stereotypes discourages talented individuals from pursuing a career in Orthopaedics. We welcome all who have the skill, passion, and commitment to serve in this vital role.
