May 2021 Research Newsletter
Regular goings on in the world of research from the BSCOS research committee.
The research committee want to help - whether you want to participate in the big ongoing NIHR trials, start your own NIHR trial or do the local study that would really make a difference in your practice.
Fix or not to fix? Recruitment continues strong with Belfast leading the way (though Leicester, Alder Hey, Norwich and Royal Berks close behind). 110 patients randomised... 60 hospitals recruiting (including nearly every major children's hospital) - Glasgow and Edinburgh have struggled to open with COVID interfering with research teams.
We are soon to start in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland too!
CRAFFT - Distal Radius Fractures
Reduce or not reduce? This is booming! On average 1 recruit per day at the moment across the UK. Alder Hey and Sheffield are leading the pack - though others (Bristol, Stoke, Leeds, Plymouth) are catching up quickly! 101 patients randomised...
We have 31 hospitals participating so far, and many more in the process of joining...
SBoCK - Simple Bone Cysts
Bone graft or no bone graft? This is a super simple trial led from Canada. It is the easiest trial to recruit to - as patients don't really mind which they get! However, recruitment is really slow (because it is rare), though the UK is easily leading the world! Oxford, Alder Hey and Sheffield are fighting for top-spot internationally. We don't think that they are looking for new hospitals at the moment.
Kids Research Day Optimising recruitment to trials
Funded by the BOA and RCSEng and open to everyone - surgeons, trainees and research teams.
How to overcome the challenge of patients (and colleagues) that don't want to randomise....delivered by experts who teach surgeons how to do this (based one their work across a range of trials, such as appendicectomy vs. no appendicectomy!).
Led by Prof Jenny Donovan who has made a career of making really tough surgical trials a success, through the QuinteT group. She is an international legend in the trials world! CPD applied for from RCS Eng.

BSCOS Collaborative Groups...
We are keen to share resources and create like minded research groups across BSCOS. The following is a live form, which we hope can easily enable collaboration and unite like minded people. It will only work if people use it!
Click here to join the conversation, and add your name and ideas to a research list. So far we have....
Add to and edit this list live now....
- DDH,
- Clubfoot
- Perthes
- CP
- Add your own research area now.....
Also we share things that the research committee find useful (so you may too!).
- Podcasts, Courses and Papers useful in research.

What's funded and starting soon...
And there is even more....
- Nottingham 'Core Kids' consensus meeting is on 12th July (in person and virtual). They are keen for people to participate to define the best outcomes in children's trauma. Contact Ben.Marson@nottingham.ac.uk
